Affirmative Action for the 1 Percent - The New York Times

In elite college admissions, a new study has found, being very rich is its own qualification. My colleague David Leonhardt walks us through the data and explains why the study is fueling calls to abandon longstanding practices like legacy admissions. It’s Thursday, July 27. ... Thank you, Michael. ... David, after the Supreme Court struck down race-based affirmative action in college admissions a few weeks ago, said it was unconstitutional, a lot of people’s attention quickly turned to other features of the college admissions process that feel in a way like alternative forms of affirmative action and preference, giving people a clear set of advantages in the process.Yes. And I think that makes sense because college admissions are about to change more than they have in a long time. And so it makes sense for colleges and for society as a whole to ask, well, what features of the current system should remain and what features should change? And the reason is that it combined admissions records — internal admissions records that several of these colleges gave the researchers access to — with tax returns, which gives us hard data on who it is that is applying to these schools. And I really do think, after years of writing about this, that this has given me and all of us a better sense of what actually happens inside admissions offices than we’ve had before. ... And so with all of this information, what did the researchers who did this study find? What’s the headline result? ... I think the headline result is that we live in an extremely unequal society, and college admissions in some ways makes it more unequal.

Supplementing Your College Application: Essay Advice From College Admission Leaders

Colleges are searching for ways to learn more about students’ backgrounds and experiences. Colleges, however, use their responses to gauge interest and match. Supplemental essays have drawn increasing attention in the wake of the Supreme Court decision that effectively struck down race-conscious admission. Colleges are searching for ways to learn more about students’ backgrounds and experiences and the ruling allowed room for schools to use essay responses to do so.I asked college admission leaders to provide context for the intent of supplemental essays and advice for how applicants might approach them.Unfortunately, these opportunities to shine are rarely given the attention and effort that they warrant. Frustrated young people eager to finish their applications perceive supplemental essays as an instruments of torture–more hoops to jump through in the gauntlet of college admission.Liz Kinsley, Associate Dean & Director of Undergraduate Admission, Northwestern University ... “Our writing supplements are designed to support students by helping them focus their responses on areas we consider most important to our holistic review: how their personal experiences have shaped various ways they see themselves engaging at Northwestern, and how their vision for college aligns with Northwestern’s institutional values, academic culture, and campus community.”

Democratizing The College Admissions Process Is Big Business

An often-marginalized topic in the pantheon of education storylines might just be the path high school students traverse to gain acceptance into institutions of higher education across the U.S. An often-marginalized topic in the pantheon of education storylines might just be the path high school students traverse to gain acceptance into institutions of higher education across the U.S. College Admission Statistics reports that 45,013,575 students applied for enrollment in the academic year 2021-2022, representing a 22% rebound from the previous year according to CNBC.Those who can afford it turn to help—often paying $15-20k+ for expensive admissions consultants or career bootcamps to increase their chances of breaking in. It’s still hard for them to find the right coach because there isn’t a central platform to compare options, read real reviews, or ensure their consultant isn’t a bad actor, but at least they have some form of help. Those who can’t afford this prohibitively expensive option apply to schools and jobs alone or lean on limited (and often erroneous) advice from friends and family.Koelliker: Admissions coaching is estimated by experts to be at least $10 billion globally. This market is very opaque and difficult to size, especially because people don’t like talking about how much they spend on admissions help. However, it’s likely a function of the $16 billion online tutoring industry, the $10 billion test preparation market, and other untracked data on graduate and international admissions coaching.

What Colleges Look for: 6 Ways to Stand Out | Applying to College | U.S. News

Applicants should challenge themselves, have a diverse list of extracurricular activities and write a strong admissions essay. Many high school students fill their days with extracurricular activities and work tireless hours to achieve a perfect GPA in hopes of getting into their top-choice college. While academic performance and extracurricular activities are important in the admissions process, colleges also consider other factors, including whether a student will be a positive addition to the campus community, experts say.But there's the cultural add," says Cezar Mesquita, director of admissions at Western Washington University. "Is there something about their own personal values, their own outlook on the world, their own skill sets and abilities to engage with that community that would add something? Like aspects of student governance or perhaps establish a new tradition or a new norm in that community. That's something colleges are going to look for."The road to an acceptance letter begins with standing out on the college application – which requires students to submit their high school transcripts, essays, letters of recommendation and in some cases, SAT or ACT scores. A student's internet presence may also be taken into account. Here are six tips from admissions staff on ways to set yourself apart from other college applicants:The choice of extracurricular activities should be authentic, says Melissa Rousseau, director of undergraduate admissions at Calvin University in Michigan. "You can usually tell when a student is just adding things to add things," she says. "So it's nice when you can see they have really dived deep into an interest or gotten engaged in something that stretches their horizons a little bit." Experts advise college applicants to challenge themselves in high school.
